Australian Gold Kangaroo coins always feature a new image of one of the four kangaroo species that inhabit the Australian continent. This years design comes from Aleysha Howarth and depicts a red kangaroo mother with its young joey. The red kangaroo is the largest member of the marsupial species and is the largest terrestrial mammal native to Australia.

On the reverse of 2020 1 oz Australian Gold Kangaroo Coins is a new design of the kangaroo species. This design features an adult kangaroo standing in the foreground on a grassy plain. In the background, the adults young joey stands nearby. The 1 oz coins in this series have a new authentication feature included for 2020. That authentication feature takes the form of a single letter engraved into the Australian Kangaroo phrase at the top of this side of the coin and it is only visible under magnification.

The obverse of 2020 Australian Gold Kangaroo Coin features the sixth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This design of Her Majesty was created by Jody Clark for Australian coinage and includes a portrait of the Queens face with her neckline and shoulders depicted in the image as well. This is the first portrait of Her Majesty to include the Queens neckline and shoulders since 1966.
