  • Description

The Mercury Dime was one of the most popular circulation coin designs in American history. This unique depiction of Liberty led to the inaccurate name of the coin in the American populace. Though it was officially the Winged Liberty design, Libertys similar appearance to the Roman messenger god Mercury resulted in the more commonly used Mercury Dime terminology. The 90% Silver Mercury Dime is available to you online today from APR 57 in packages totaling $1 (USD) face value.

Coin Highlights:

  • Features a total of 10 Mercury Dimes!
  • Individual coins contain .900 actual silver content.
  • Issued individual face values of $.10 (USD) by the United States.
  • On the obverse is Adolph A. Weinmans depiction of Winged Liberty.
  • The reverse side includes a Roman fasces wrapped in an olive branch.

When it was released in 1916, the Mercury Dime had imagery that was common in the redesign of American coinage taking place in this era. The image of Liberty was loosely based upon Greek depictions of the Goddess of Victory, but very much American in its more modern visuals. The reverse of the Mercury Dime, in particular, was altogether unique for American coins past and present.

Weinmans depiction of Liberty on the obverse is one of the more masculine visions of Liberty, which aided in the belief that the design bore a strong resemblance to the messenger god Mercury. She is captured in left-profile relief on the coins with tightly curled, shorter hair wearing what is known as a pileus, or Liberty cap. The cap too played a role in the Mercury Dime name due to its wings.

On the obverse of these 90% Silver Mercury Dimes, youll find Weinmans depiction of Liberty. Her figure is surrounded by engravings of Liberty, In God We Trust, the AW initials of the designer, and a date mark at the bottom.

The reverse side of Silver Mercury Dimes features the Roman fasces. This was an object carried around the lictors who would accompany Roman magistrates. In this particular design, the fasces represents war and justice, but it is contrasted at the same time by the symbolism of peace represented in the olive branch wrapped around the fasces.
