In 1916, the United States Mint introduced three new coin designs to its primary denominations in the dime, quarter, and half-dollar series. The Barber Coinage designs had been in use on the dime, quarter, and half dollar since 1892 when the US Mint targeted the coins for a redesign in the 1910s. In 1916, three fresh designs from two different artists were among the winning images selected to replace US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barbers designs on the aforementioned denominations.

Adolph A. Weinman had two designs chosen at this time to replace Barber Coinage images. While his Walking Liberty design may have been the most famous of the era replacing the existing half-dollar design, his Mercury Dime design of Winged Liberty proved equally popular with Americans.

The obverse of the 90% Silver Mercury Dime features a left-profile portrait of Winged Liberty. This design features Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap on her head. The resemblance of the Liberty bust lead many Americans to refer to the coin as the Mercury Dime because of the similarity between Liberty and the depictions of the Roman messenger god Mercury.

On the reverse face of 90% Silver Mercury Dime coins is a Roman fasces wrapped in an olive branch. A fasces was carried by Roman lictors and, when used on coins, represents war and justice. The large olive branch represents peace.

These 90% Silver Mercury Dimes are available to you in a plastic bag that contains a total of 5,000 US Dimes from the Mercury Dime Series. The available date marks you will find on the coins in your bag include 1916 to 1945. Each of the coins features 90% silver content with 10% copper.
