Abstract expressionist Ray Parker (1922 - 1990) brings to life his other-worldly "Butterfly" utilizing dramatic blocks of color against a stark white background. The use of overlapping contrasting colors accentuates the shapes and contours of the creature, creating a captivating image in stunning magenta and orange. Showcasing the unusual shapes that emerge from overlaying forms, hybrids of crescents and triangles structure a creature with captivating features, and a piercing green and purple for animating the work with a playful dynamism. While undeniably representational, the artwork’s stunning composition is designed with an accomplished reverence of formal abstraction.
This work is hand signed by the artist in pencil in the lower right. It the 40th piece of the limited edition of 250 prints. The artwork is also framed. Please refer below for the measurements.
Ray Parker was a prominent figure in what influential art critic Clement Greenberg called 'Post-Painterly Abstraction'. Parker was also associated with other important art movements, such as Color field painting and Lyrical Abstraction.
