Item Description:
The subject matter of this painting focuses on life in the Middle East with two groups of three Arabs conversing under a large tent in the desert. One of the group’s male figures in the middle of the painting looks like a merchant. On the right side of the painting, there is a seated old man. There are two camels in the foreground on the right side. On the left, several more camels are in the distance in the background on the left side in front of some white buildings of a village.
This painting, full of iconography that alludes to the material culture of the Middle East, rich in its textiles, furniture, clothing and architecture is a beautiful example of Orientalist Painting. Such genre scenes constitute a significant chapter of European Art of the 18th and 19th century and were particularly popular in Great Britain and in France.
The painting measures approximately 17.5" in height by 26.5” inches wide. The frame is approximately 23.5" high by 34” inches wide.
