JAMES EDGERTON 1938 ENVELOPE COMMEMORATING 20YRS OF 1ST AIR MAIL - $1K APPRAISAL VALUE
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This is a professionally framed memorabilia piece featuring an autographed envelope commemorating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the first air-mail route in 1918. The “Via Air Mail” envelope has an Air-Mail thematic stamp, an official ink stamp reading “Washington, D.C. May 15 1:00 PM 1938. Flagship STA.” and has a print referencing the first air mail route and the national air mail week (May 15-31, 1938.) The envelope is autographed ‘James Edgerton. Pilot, First Air Mail. May 15, 1918’ and is addressed to Ms. Richard Mayback on 241 Union St. Hamburg, N.Y.
The envelope is paired with a newspaper clipping of a photograph shot by Owen Duvall. The photo caption reads: “Air Mail Pioneers. When the first air mail was flown between Washington and New York 50 years ago yesterday, one of the pilots was James J. Edgerton, 72, of Boca Raton, Fla. (left), shown chatting with Reuben H. Fleet, 81, of San Diego Calif., who headed the operation. The plane is a 1918 model biplane, rebuilt for the Golden Anniversary, flown from California to Washington and now on exhibit at the Smithsonian’s Arts and Industries Building.”
On May 15, 1918, a mail plane take-off from Washington to New York was witnessed by President Wilson and Government officials. The plane lost its way and landed in Southern Maryland. At the same time, another plane, piloted by James Edgerton and T.H Webb, took-off from New York for Washington; reaching the capital -flying 236 miles in 3 hours, 20 minutes. They delivered the first official air mail.
