This is a letter signed by Franklin D Roosevelt during his time as Assistant Secretary of the NAVY during World War I. The letter thanks a Mrs. J. L. Schwaab for donating optical instruments to the NAVY typed on NAVY Department letterhead.
was an American politician who served as the 32nd president of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. A member of the Democratic Party, he won a record four presidential elections and became a central figure in world events during the first half of the 20th century.
The letter reads as follows:
Dear Madam:
Your prompt and patriotic response to the NAVY’s call for binoculars, telescopes, and spy-glasses, is most appreciated. The glasses will be very useful in the prosecution of Naval Operations until victory is won.
At the termination of the war, if possible, every effort will be made to return them to you when it is hoped that you will feel compensated for any evidence of wear, by the knowledge that you have supplied “Eyes for the NAVY” during a very trying period.
On behalf of the NAVY, I wish to thank you most heartily.
