- Description
This is a gorgeous 20th century circa 1992 painting. It depicts a traditional Mayan folk dance, by Mariano Gonzalez Chavajay. It is made with oil paint on canvas in a Tz'utuhil Maya style. The painting is surrounded by a worn gold, black, and red frame. The artist's signature is on the bottom left. The title "Al Baile" or "The Dance" and the year of the painting's production are both written in the bottom right corner, in orange paint.
Mariano is a mostly self-taught Tz'utuhil Maya. Tz'utuhil refers to the language spoken by this group of artists in Guatemala. Mariano Gonzalez Chavajay's grandfather, Rafael Gonzalez y Gonzalez founded the Tz'utuhil Maya studio sometime around 1980. The oeuvre of the atelier focuses on traditional Mayan subjects such as folk dances, festivals, rituals, and harvests. Chavajay's paintings have been exhibited accompanying ancient Mayan artifacts and several belong to the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.
The painting measures approximately 28" inches wide, 24" inches high with the frame and approximately 24.75" inches wide, 21" inches high without the frame.
