Original Family Correspondence Letter Maritime History 1830s Fountain Pen - $2,000.00 Appraisal Value!

Item Description
This is a historical document from the 1830s! A letter written from a sailor to his sister about his travels throughout the US.  It is handwritten with a fountain pen on paper in black ink. The writer of the letter seems to have a low educational status, as he makes a lot of mistakes. This is typical of the 1800s as the educational system was much different than it is today. From reading, we can understand the struggles that come with sailing - loneliness, isolation. He feels if he were to visit home, he would not fit in. Common friends and family members amongst the recipient and writer is also discussed. 


An effort to transcribe the letter in the most accurate way possible is as follows:

 Dear sister it is with pleasure that I impress this privilege of writing to you informing you that I am in good health and arrived to New York the 25th of March with a pleasant passage of 18 days it was our calculation to come home but we had got a charter for New Orleans and expect to sail about the 10th of April. Since we arrived I have seen Thomas Hooper, he told me all the news he could. I did not see him but (....) and could not find him afterwards he told me that you was all well and having good times but you did not mean to let me know everything about them for I have not had a letter from home this winter nor heard from home before all the crew have had letters but me so I concluded that you had no more good than you would yourselves but if you have got good I hope you will be good according to Mister Hooper till all the folks is ministers and deacons so i conclude that if i come home I should be a castout from your company— but for me goodness it is about the same Mr Hooper told me that he believed that John (....) Heller was blind which was bad news to me but if he is you must tell him not to be Discouraged and tell Harriet not to work herself to death. I should like to sea her little girls and if they are poor I think it is best to get good places for her children and boot them out You must tell father that I shall be to home likely about the middle of June and if he wants to go a fishing he had better higher sum one to do the work the way he thinks best and if he stays to home which I think is best he must plant all he can without working too hard. I should come home but I have heard the times was hard and wages was low and I have 23 dollars for a month and that is better-there (....) wasting for our work is not heard I have had a very pleasant voyage and (….) we shall have another our mate left us hear he was a very clever man and expects to take Mr Young’s place if he don’t return to go in season
