WEEGEE ORIGINAL SILVER GELATIN PRINT: DISTORTION SERIES
CIRCA 1960 - $20,000.00 APR
This original vintage Silver Gelatin Print by Weegee is a wonderful work from his “Distortions” series. “Distortions” is a highly-sought-after series of photographs in which Weegee took photographs of celebrities and other well-known figures and distorted their faces through the use of prisms. The distortions were done in such a way that the subjects were still recognizable, toeing the line between reverence and irreverence. The subject of this photograph is unknown. The piece is in overall very fine condition. There is a small crease in the top right corner, but the printed area is unaffected.
The print measure 8" x 10" inches.
Arthur Fellig (1899-1968), known better by his pseudonym “Weegee,” was a renowned photojournalist, first known for his photos of gangs, crime scenes, and NYC street life. While taking crime photographs in NYC, Fellig claimed to have psychic powers and took up the name “Weegee,” as a phonetic equivalent of “Ouija.” By sleeping fully clothes with a police radio by his side, Weegee was able to be among the first to arrive at crime scenes. With his camera, typewriter, and darkroom equipment in the trunk of his car, he was able to produce photos nearly instantaneously, earning him a top spot as an investigative photographer. Later, he moved to Hollywood as a consultant and actor, and further established himself as one of the first tabloid photographers through his photography of celebrities, whom he often distorted through prisms. His works still resonates with many and varied audiences and can be found in major contemporary art museums throughout the world.
