SCRIMSHAW WHALE TOOTH: BATTLE OF LAKE CHAMPLAIN

This 19th-century Scrimshaw Whale Tooth titled Battle of Lake Champlain is a beautiful engraving depicting the Battle of Plattsburg, which took place in Plattsburg, NY during the War of 1812. One side shows two fleets of ships at odds. The opposite side has rubbed-off engravings, which seem to depict a shield with the American flag. The tip of the tooth is wonderfully carved and engraved to depict the beak of a bald eagle. Thought to be from first half of the 19th century.
The tooth measures 5 inches x 2.5 inches and weighs 170 grams.
“Scrimshaw” refers to the scrollwork, engravings, and carvings done in bone or ivory. They are most often done on whale teeth and usually feature nautical-themed carvings. Most originate from the 18th- and 19th-centuries and continued with some regularity until the ban of commercial whaling in the 20th century.
