The Chinese Lunar Calendar follows a 12-year cycle that repeats itself, and the Year of the Rat is the first in that cycle of 12. The rat is one of 12 different animals represented on the Zodiac. Those individuals born under the sign of the individual animals in the cycle are believed to share traits and characteristics with those animals.

Rats are considered cunning and clever. That was evident in the ability of the rat to win the race to meet the Jade Emperor.
